Budgeting for Beginners: Where to Start
March 14, 2026
Never made a budget? This guide will teach you the basics in a simple, practical way, without complications.
The minimum you need to do
If you've never budgeted, start with the absolute minimum:
- •Know how much you earn — Net monthly income
- •Know how much you spend — Record expenses for 1 month in PaxMoney
- •Compare — Spending more than you earn? Equal? Surplus?
- •Set ONE goal — Save $500/month, pay off a debt, create emergency fund
- •Adjust — Cut what's needed to reach that goal
That's a budget. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that at first.
Beginner mistakes
- •Unrealistic budget: Don't put $200 for food if you spend $800. Start with limits close to reality and reduce gradually.
- •No buffer for surprises: Always reserve 5-10% for unexpected costs.
- •Too many categories: Start with 8-10. Refine later.
- •Giving up after one bad month: Budgeting is a skill — it improves with practice.
- •Not reviewing: A budget without review is just a wish list.
